The Toyota Fortuner enjoys significant popularity in the Indian SUV market. Despite its outdated interior and premium pricing, strong sales persist, largely driven by the vehicle's reliable and powerful diesel engine. However, impending BS7 emission regulations may necessitate the discontinuation of the diesel powertrain. In response, Toyota is expected to introduce a new turbocharged petrol engine.
High-Performance Turbocharged Gasoline Engine - New Turbo Petrol Engine
Toyota Fortuner currently offers a 2.8-liter diesel engine (201 bhp & 500 Nm) and a 2.7-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine (164 bhp & 245 Nm). Upcoming BS7 emission standards may necessitate the discontinuation of diesel engines by several automakers to manage costs. Consequently, industry speculation indicates Toyota is developing a new turbocharged petrol engine.
Toyota is reportedly developing a new 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine. Preliminary specifications suggest power outputs of 300 bhp and 400 Nm, or 400 bhp and 549 Nm. This engine is expected to debut in the next-generation Toyota Fortuner and Hilux, though these vehicles will likely utilize the lower-output variant, positioning them as segment-leading SUVs in terms of power.
Toyota Fortuner Engine: Projected Cost and Release Date
Furthermore, the new gasoline engine will enable Toyota to implement a competitive pricing strategy for its SUVs. The current gasoline Fortuner's on-road price in Mumbai ranges from ₹39.88 lakh to ₹41.76 lakh, while the diesel model, excluding the GR Sport variant, ranges from ₹43.58 lakh to ₹51.23 lakh. Consequently, the new turbo gasoline engine may be offered with a starting on-road price in Mumbai of ₹40 lakh.
Regarding the product launch, the new engine's availability is still a few months out. An updated Fortuner featuring a new 2.8-liter hybrid diesel engine is anticipated in the near future. This updated SUV will include minor cosmetic enhancements. Furthermore, a next-generation Fortuner, equipped with a new turbo petrol engine, is projected for launch in the latter half of 2025.
